    These guys appear to be in the midst of some action..my guess is he put it there temporarily for quick access (as a weapon maybe), it's not secured too well for long term carry from the look of it.

    Is this cropped from a larger photo?

    There are a lot of interesting things in the first photo. The way the mess kit is attached, that there's no cup on the canteen, the way the spade is attached and the brown belt (unless he's an officer afaik).

    Also, in the second photo too! They appear to be in transit but there is no canteen or mess kit attached to the bread bag.

    Hello,
    It is interesting to note that both soldiers are 1st MG gunners.
    Both shovels seen on these images are not german. On the second photo, the shovel is czech and the Gasmask canister is carried upside down...

    Kochgeschirr on first seems to have a hole in the base.
