Personally, I've never totally understood these little tags either. I Assume that the different colors and different shapes relate to various crate contents, such as: red for military, round for clothing, diamond for machinery, etc. But, as far as I've ever read, no one has Ever come up with a definitive listing of just what these tags actually signify or why it wasn't easier to simply write on the crate what the contents was. Just How were they attached to the cargo and has there ever been a photograph of one of these things in Place?

No idea about how they work, but they look pretty neat.
