This photo is very interesting indeed as the soldier used his waterproof Zeltbahn to protect the messkit and Beutel. Both straps meant to retain the Zeltbahn secure the bottom.

These guys look Polizei instead of Heer....but the improvised WWI look alike combat pack is tremendous....Zeltbahn rolled and O-shaped around the messkit
