I've had this mask stashed away for quite a while, and decided it's time to find out what's up with the filter. It has no WaA, but instead has an "Okt. 1943" ink stamp. It also has a plastic cover and tape over the intake. I thought the filter body looked fine, but the plastic cap has to be post-war. Who did that?

Bundeswehr filters were also fitted with rubber end caps such as yours. It's possible it has been re-issued from stored wartime stock. Personally I would not tinker with the filter it is wartime produced and looks fine.
