Nice one !, indeed, the cord looks to be original to the compass....
I can remember there was a discussion on the meaning of the A on the compass.... but I don't remember if things were sorted out....

A is a type of compass with a rotating dial to sort out map readings and magnetic north/geographic north issues. If you look closely you can see the outer rotating ring. At least this is what I have gleaned from the manual H.Dv 362. Marschkompaß A. It is not an Artillerie or Armee marked compass as some have speculated. NH
