I would think it is yes. Similar labels can be found on cardboard ammo boxes.

Yes, it is an ammo crate, patronenkasten is ammo crate. Not sure what ammo is is for, best wait for those more up on these to answer.

From my schoolboy German it seems it once held yellow flares of some sort, possibly for a flare pistol.

Sorry for the late response but I just found this and have some ammo that I have reasearched. You have a case that was for 1500 rounds of steel core tracer ammo. Most likely 8mm, but I can't find a size on the label. It is most likely MG42 ammo. The case contained five battle packs of 300 rounds each for easier transport. The bullets and battle packs in it should have looked something like this.
