It looks like an early strap but would be good to see wider view of it.

It does not look like an issue Gasmask strap to me. It's wider than anything regulation ever produced to carry the canister...
Rather crude handstitching, buckle that is not used on any WWII german equipment...
it's a replacement but wartime or postwar?....could be wartime but who knows...

Having now seen it completely I agree with JP on this one. The buckle is not standard pattern. But it looks to have some age and the pattern of the holes, stitching looks like a half decent field replacement to me.

any further comments as to the possible origin of the strap much appreciated.
