    Looks like standard baklite issue whistle I had one like it once. I see they are repo them now made out of plastic. timothy

    They were made out of bakelite rather than metal so that they wouldn't stick to the users lips in freezing conditions like those encountered on the Eastern Front. True.

    My example was dug up in Stalingrad (which was known to get a little chilly at times)

    Originally it was a lanyard so it could be fitted to a tunic button ( but things break and so string was probably used )
