I love it when a friends wife hates guns, usually ends up in my hands, too! And free is always a good price. What's the date? Very fuzzy picture.
I believe 1944 , the last number is not good to read. Its a Russian revolver, the nagant wich everybody will know, found in an attic of a house in Belgium

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

D'ont worry Even the k98 , whe can buy it here without license , they are considerd as hdf weapons , meaning they have value as historic, decoratif and folclore. But once you go shooting with it, then you need a license, what is obviuos.
Difficult to see the markings in the fuzzy pics, but would assume Liege manufacture before production was moved to Russia, as this was found in Belgium.
Hope you are right about being allowed to own this. Better check up on local firearms laws.
These old Nagants were known as "clubs" by many, as they were so God awful a pistol, that many thought using them as a club was more likely to be successful...

it is Russian made by Izhevsk and I would assume its captured by a German soldier.
I follow the local laws, that's why I know that it is legal
