NO, dont even try to take them apart, they are a precision piece of kit, dirt shouldnt have got inside the casing to affect the lenses, but if it has you may need to take them to a specialist in order to have them cleaned inside, i once tried to clean the inside of a pair of binocs , 70s era, the trouble i had was bloody awful, i learnt my lesson although i was very lucky that i eventually got the prisms inside to sit correctly after 20-30 attempts of taking them apart and reassembly but they were never really the same

Don't worry! I never even considered it... I was just making sure. It looks I just need to clean the eye pieces. They're a little dirty on the outside.

    Case in point:

Would it be ok to use a cotton swap q-tip with perhaps a dab of rubbing alcohol to clean the eye pieces?

    Something very interesting just happened...

I am currently working the Saturday morning shift at our facility. A customer dumped a load of trash and then came to my office. He said (please excuse this translation... I used google): "Sprechen Sie deutsch? Mein Vater war in der Schutzstaffel. Die SS." I understood what he said, but I don't speak German, so I kind of just had a excited look on my face. He then said in English: "I heard you're looking for stuff... I'll be in contact. How my father got into this country is a story in-itself!"

I gave him my email and phone number... we'll see if this leads to anything... !

I dont see why not, the idea is to clean the dirt away without letting any residue get under the lenses, provided you dont use anything that has abrasive action you should be ok

Yes, I am! I will flatly admit to it!

He was rattling off German... but I think he said something about the 10th SS? Does that ring a bell to anyone? I may, and probably am wrong...

It remains to be seen if he is just going to show me stuff, or if he will give/ sell me stuff. Either way, I am very glad!

I'll use a drop of rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and try to gently brush away the dust and grime. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Just the opportunity to hear his stories of his father is invaluable! But the possibility of obtaining some SS gear is a definite bonus. I bought the Totenkopf in my display picture from the nephew of the veteran who brought it back from Germany, and talking to him about it's history and his uncle's story was one of the most interesting experiences I've ever had. If you do acquire any of this man's things, I'm sure you'll find they become infinitely more interesting when you know their story. Another great experience was recently discovering a neighbour of mine served in the RAF during WW2, and we talked for a long time about it. He was never involved in combat in the end, but just to hear his stories and his perspective of the war was really special. I would suggest to you asking this man to write down his stories if possible, it's what I did in my case. I'm excited for you! Haha

I am very excited as well! I will make sure to write down what he says... and I'm hoping to correspond with him via e-mail!

I also really need to sit down with my grandmother and write down her history as well... she was from Zhytomyr, Ukraine and she experienced some amazing and horrible things. According to one thing she told me, the Germans rounded up a large group of people and put them into a line. She's ethnic German and was speaking to her mother in German... A German soldier watching over the line overheard their conversation and removed them from the lineand. My grandmother is positive that the people in that line were being led away to be executed...
