This is one story from a French farmer that I would believe, for the simple reason that there are published photos of US troops using their tin-lids for just that! Can I find one in my references at present..............can I hell!!

That is a novel story, but I hope you were not charged extra for the damage.
I suspect that someone tried to gas-weld something to the top of that helmet and failed.
The paint burn pattern and melted metal are more consistent with an oxy-acetylene torch. It's not likely that a coleman stove would get the steel hot enough to melt , let alone not leaving scorch and soot marks rising up from the crown of the helmet.
