random find - a compass

Iv recently found this compass and wondered if anyone here would be able to shed a little light on it. It was made by T. Dent & co London . it has No. 54478 stamped on the rim as well as the No.1085 shown in the pic attached. it has an eight inch diameter and is housed in a mahogany hinged box. Any information appreciated.

It looks like a British Ship's compass. Any more markings on it?

this compass could be issued to the trawlers on mine sweeping duties as i have came across one of these in scarbourgh fishing museum in yorkshire hope this might be of any help

thanks brochbaz,iv found that it was manufactured 1897 onwards so you could well be correct.im hopeing that the Dent site will release information on the serial no. soon.
