I was looking trough the thread about non-militaria hobbies, and saw some posts about history in general (I dont know how to say it, non-war history?) and I thought, does anyone here have an interest in another field of history, like ancient roman or greek?

I myself am really into the subject of vikings and viking mythology. Among the countless ww2 fact and fictive books I borrow weekly from the library there is sometimes a book or two about vikings. As I was born in Sweden the whole viking thing is really close to me, I wear my Thor's hammer pendant with pride.

As an archaeologist, my primary interest is in the Vikings, though it's been a while since last I excavated a Viking period site. I am published as a specialist in Norse period ceramics from the Outer Hebrides. I have excavated Norse period buildings within a settlement on the Island of South Uist and also at a site on Angelsey. I found a small piece of bone with 5 letters of Viking period Ogham writing carved on it and it is only the 6th such object to have ever been found and is the earliest evidence for writing from the Outer Hebrides.

I am interested in all kinds of history. As my name implies. I hope to be an archaeologist one day like Bond.

    Cheers, Pat

I'm rather interested in the Norse right now myself- although it's as much a continuation of my profession as an ancient recreation artisan as anything; for years I've been forging Roman and Greek arms and armour, and the beautiful work Norse swordsmiths did is an automatic draw when one gets to a certain point. I'm not 100% sure I'm there yet, but I mean to try! I've also done a Thor's Hammer pendant myself- I'd love to see yours TrondK if you would be willing to post a picture.

Other than the Norse, as I mentioned I'm continually studying ancient Greece and Rome- it's amazing stuff.

Viking settlements have been found in Newfoundland, the first discoverers of America !

I used to take part in Viking period re enactments and have taken part in the Jorvik Viking festival on a number of occasions as well as many other battles of the period, including the Battle of Maldon and the Battle of Hastings. It was great fun to do and stimulated my interest in all things Viking. I used to make many of the items of clothing, jewelry and equipment myself.

My family is from the area of the Danelaw and my surname is originally of Scandinavian origin.
