Me too Carl i'm off to Pine Ridge, the Blackhills and the Badlands in June !!
    Hi Paul,

You'll love it there! I worked in Montana and Wyoming a few years back and had the opportunity to visit the Oglala Sioux reservation on the Rosebud river at Pine Ridge, S.D. It came around through me knowing a teacher at the Ashland Indian School in south east Montana. The pupils there are mainly Northern Cheyenne and Crow tribe, although there are some Oglala Sioux as well.

I guess you'll be doing Mt. Rushmore too? If you get the chance Wounded Knee is meant to be pretty good for a visit as well. I've never been there, but have visited Little Bighorn battlefield 8 times in all seasons, a bit out your way I reckon, but again, if you get the chance....

    Regards, Ned.

As an archaeologist, my primary interest is in the Vikings, though it's been a while since last I excavated a Viking period site. I am published as a specialist in Norse period ceramics from the Outer Hebrides. I have excavated Norse period buildings within a settlement on the Island of South Uist and also at a site on Angelsey. I found a small piece of bone with 5 letters of Viking period Ogham writing carved on it and it is only the 6th such object to have ever been found and is the earliest evidence for writing from the Outer Hebrides.
What kinds of glazes did they use for their pottery friend ?

    Hi Ned,

That must have been a great experience mate to have lived and worked there , i was in Montana about 15 years ago and went to the Little Big Horn and the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Reservations but didn,t have time to get down to SD and any of the Oglala reservations !! We'll be going to Mt Rushmore but also Wounded Knee , the Crazy Horse memorial and Pine Ridge and as much as of the Blackhills area as i can fit in before heading off into Wyoming in the direction of Cody and Yellowstone , i've been waiting 15 years to go back so i'm really looking forward to it !!

Any other recommendations let me know,

    cheers

I am a tad bit obsessed with the Inca Empire. They were the Romans of the New World, and I don't really know why they don't even get a tenth of the coverage on the History Channel that the Romans do.

The archaeologist in me also loves the ruins in Jordan and Palestine from the Nabatean and Roman times. Petra is a favorite of mine.

I will be going to Jordan again this July. I can't wait!

Now that you mentioned, I also noticed that there rarely comes a documentary about Incas in TV

    Sounds great!!

If your going to Cody I recommend a steak in the Irma hotel, Buffalo Bill's gaff. The Cody Firearms Museum is a must see, they've got loads of fascinating gear there. My real recommendation would be to visit 'Old Trail Town' though just on the outskirts, Butch Cassidy and the hole in the wall gangs cabin, the Rivers saloon and the grave of John 'Liver eating' Johnson, made famous as 'Jeramiah Johnson' the film starring Robert Redford. The place is owned by a wonderful chap named Bob Edgar, archaeologist, artist and trick shooter extraordinaire! I also loved the evening Rodeo's there too!

If you're going to Yellowstone, see if you can visit Cooke City near the northern gate, it's great on western atmosphere. I used to park up there before packing in country to Lake Abundance and Daisy Pass with a couple of mates on horseback to hunt Moose and Elk. Then of course there's Mammoth Hot Springs and Old Faithfull that are worth a squint....I hope you have a great time, I'm sure you will, everyone is very welcoming in those parts, just don't try feeding the bears, but that's another story.

    Regards, Ned.

Ned said " . . . just don't try feeding the bears, but that's another story." Don't try petting a Bison either (believe it or not people do attempt to approach those huge critters!)
We spent several summers traveling around that area and there just isn't enough time to see everything. It's wonderful!
