OK- Here is the whole story.

My wife is constantly bringing home crap from thrift stores
and yard sales to be resold on ebay.

Yesterday she brought home this old Stanley plane.
The wood parts are all in great condition but the metals
have some surface rust. I know these old planes can be
collectable but do I attempt to clean the rust or leave it
as is.

We have all seen items that were the value was ruined
by someone trying to clean them.

We know this thing is not real valuable but she got it
cheap. If she could get $30 she would be happy.

Any thoughts?

Hi Greg,
I would suggest removing the wood parts and soaking the metal parts with surface rust in CLR. You would need to pay attention to how long you soak them. I would not leave it in the solution longer than required. I have used this product to remove rust from tools and if it doesn't need to be left in there for very long, it will leave any original surface treatment alone, ( blueing, parkerizing etc.). If you are successful, I would not think it would be difficult to get $30. for it.

I can't see why it would devalue a Tool to clean it. They are not coins or anything...
