The Balkan Kreuz
Article about: Hi, last night i was watching a program about the Teutonic Knights. I wonder, the black cross used by them, is the predecessor of the known Balkan Kreuz used by the German Army? - - Updated

Re: The Balkan Kreuz
It is a possibility, the Knights Hospitaller had similar symbols. There were so many Feudal orders that used crosses it will probably be hard to tell.

Re: The Balkan Kreuz
Basically, it's a stylized version of the Iron Cross, which was in turn derived from the symbol of the Teutonic Knights.
On the risk of appearing to be pedantic, can I just add that it drives me up the wall everytime I read the term "Balkan Kreuz". It's called Balkenkreuz (= "beam cross" or "bar cross"). It has nothing whatsoever to do with the Balkans.
