"In all my years as a soldier, I have never seen men fight so hard." - SS Obergruppenfuhrer Wilhelm Bittrich - Arnhem
Thanks for posting this Nick, it is a wonderful idea.
Personally, I would like to see some of the national holidays named after men such as Churchill or Nelson for example. One thing that riles me is how great deeds are often left almost without recognition, yet if you can kick a bit of leather around, you are deemed a legend after five minutes
Cheers,
Carl
I couldn't agree more Carl!

It is about time.

It Should have been a 50 pound note.
Winston is worth more than a pint of bitter and a packet of crisps.
Good stuff really though.
Cheers all
Dave
Bravo!
Gotta laugh at the quote on the note....."I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

The Govenor of the Bank of England said that this was an appropriate choice given the country's economic difficulties.
"We do not face the challenges faced by Churchill's generation. But we have our own, the spirit of those words remains as relevant today as it was to my parents' generation who fought for the survival of our country and freedom under Churchill's leadership."
Personally, after the scandals of RBS, Nat West, Barclays, Ulster Bank etc. where Joe Public is now bailing out these buggers and criminal fat cats who run them, I think a more appropriate quote would have been:
"NEVER WAS SO MUCH OWED BY SO MANY TO SO FEW."
Rant over, Ned.
'I do not think we can hope for any better thing now.
We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far.
It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. R. SCOTT.
Last Entry - For God's sake look after our people.'
In memory of Capt. Robert Falcon Scott, Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers, Lawrence Oates and Edgar Evans. South Pole Expedition, 30th March 1912.
It's great that the great man will be on a banknote!
