    Hi Cameron,

What exactly do you mean by document?

I would say most of us take detailed/ high quality photos of each piece of our collection in order to post them here for discussion/ authentication.

Well I also take pics of any items that I get and post them on a thread about my collection (My Growing Collection) I was going to create a spreadsheet of all my items, what I paid for them and what they are worth for insurance purposes but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet but I do have a rough idea of how much my collection is worth and how much I have spent
    Thanks, Glen.

    Hi

That is what I think I should have done in the first place as now I have to document a couple of years worth of items!

    Thanks

I collect paperwork and whenever a new item arrives I scan the item (or the pages of the item if it is a Wehrpass etc) and place each in a seperate folder within a general Militaria folder.
I then add the item to a list for items bought in that particular year and then I add the details of the items to a listing for Award Citations or Wehrpass/Soldbuch which show the basic details of the items (name, medals won, units etc). See attached images to get the general idea...

I seriously need to start doing this! Getting too many items to remember all the details of them.

Once you have done them don't forget to back-up the files onto a memory stick or external hard drive etc. I try to remember to back-up my files every couple of months (or less if I have obtained a lot of new items in a short space of time.) There was a moment in the past when I hadn't backed up the files for a good 8 months or so and the PC crashed and died completely so when I bought a new PC I had to will myself to re-scan a lot of items all over again, after the pain in the neck job of figuring out what stuff I had scanned and kept on the last backed up files and which ones were lost and had to be done again!
