hi can only advise that before you purchase post photos of the item here to get yhe opinions of the experts before buying. dont get too disheartened if at some time you do end up with a fake, it has happened to the best of us.

Whilst this is a very rewarding hobby/interest, it can at times be very testing due to the large sums of money that can be involved. The comments above have covered the areas that you should really make a point of remembering, as even experienced collectors make mistakes. The best thing that you could have done is join a forum such as this one, because here you will receive expert advice from some very learned folk. "Post before you buy." should be your rule number one. Even if you only have 1% of doubt regarding an item that you are considering, post it on here first. Rule number two should be "Never forget rule number one." Follow the advice over impulse rule when collecting, and you will be rewarded with a nice collection that you can enjoy, without having to worry about authenticity.
Regards,
Carl
The best advice I would give would be basically what Kradspam said. Try to focus on one small area of collecting. It's a lot more rewarding to build a collection on a particular theme than to buy randomly and end up with nice pieces that don't really mean anything. It is also easier to build your knowledge in a small, focused area too.
Don't worry too much about the authenticity of items - just pass anything you are interested in through this forum and you'll be fine in that regard

Be patient when collecting. Make sure to buy some reference books on what you are interested in. You can always ask somones oppinion on a potential purchase if you are not sure.
I have stuck by these rules, and have yet to buy a fake.
