Try not to be daunted by the hobby, you're supposed to be doing it for enjoyment!
You've had some good advice already and there's not much different I can add.
Choose an area of interest that will please you, one that will make you happy when you look at your collection.
Read threads on your chosen subject, ask questions of the members here if you're unsure.
Don't be in a hurry to spend money for the sake of it.
Learn the history behind your items and you will enjoy collecting them all the more.
If you find something you like and you want to buy it, run it past the forum first. The members here will give you honest advice and with your best interests at heart.
Don't be afraid to ask a dealer to hold an item for you if you want second opinions. Any decent dealer will be happy to hold something for you for a few days while you decide and get advice. If the item is genuine they won't have anything to worry about.
If someone gives you a 'hard sell' attitude, walk away, don't be pressured into buying something you're not happy with.
Shop around for items, I gave you a list of some good dealers, browse their sites and look at what they have to offer, compare prices.
Contribute to the forum with what you learn, you'll be surprised how quickly you will pick things up.

I would not buy the first one. There are several bad items in it.

    Cheers, Ade.

Ade means there are fakes in that book. Not all but some.

I have a good advice i think, not mentioned. When you have found a item you want to post for peoples opnions, let's say a Totenkopf cap skull. Try to look in that section here on forum where you will find originals. Make up your mind about what you think about it, right or wrong. Then post it and find out if you were correct or not. If you do it like this with all items, you will at some point have seen a lot of originals and fakes. This will help you learn about the items of your interest. This method have helped me a lot.

    Regards, Lars

andy's quite right its better to know an incredible amount of knowledge regarding one area of collecting rather than try and know a bit right across the playing field this way there's less chance of being stung, all the best dave.
