I actually loved the thin red line, everyone I know though hates it. I cant remember its inaccuracies besides excesive disobeying orders...
The philosophical part of life and death and changing of the protagonist is the main part that captivated me

My wife and I have been watching 'The Pacific' series through the Holidays.
Not quite as good as BoB, but still interesting.

A similar Pacific Theater film that she doesn't like is 'The Thin Red Line'
set on location on Guadalcanal. It recieved less attention than BoB,
as they were both released around the same time. Styled after
Veteran/author James Jones' book: 'WWII', certain portions
were taken directly from it - similar scenes were also
included in 'The Pacific' as well..........

One of the worst for me was the Bridge of Remagen, mainly the m2 carbines with 30rd clips, it bothers me alot since it is one of my favorite battles.
Have there been any similar movies made about it that are ok?

This is what James Jones refers to as the 'evolution of a soldier'. He also says
(loosely) that war is 'hours upon hours of endless boredom, interspersed
with moments of sheer terror' - which the film accurately portrays,
along with an attempt at the 'Thousand Yard Stare'.

The scene where one soldier pulls a grenade from his pocket, dislodging
the pin, then turning away to shield the blast from his buddies as it
explodes was an actual event that Jones witnessed.

Just can't get my head around John Travolta as a Navy Officer.
I kept expecting him to break into dance moves from
'Saturday Night Fever'.........

I believe that is the only one concerning the Remagen bridge.........

It needs a new movie to represent it, IMO it is a severly overlooked battle for how important it was,
I May have a slight bias since my 88 year old freind was there when it fell in (an engineer) thank God he was not one of them that died when it collapsed

Thin Red Line is an excellent film. It is more thought provoking than battle scenes, there is more depth. I think you have to watch it a few times to understand what it is about. I like the Pacific. Sledges story is true and represents his book 'the old breed' well doing it justice.

I think SPR came out in 98. I thinks its time we are due another epic. They only seem to come along every 15 years!!!

Cockleshell Heroes is a classic by the way!!!

There is an earlier B&W version of the thin red line.

The cockleshell heroes is a great film though the name of the major in charge is incorrect as is the rank of the other officer who took part as he was a Lt not a captain.

With all movies, it is all about entertainment and suspension of disbelief is critical to that, though we all sit there and pass these sorts of comments.

True, searching out the faults of Hollywood for us leaves little room to avoid becoming quite captious . . . and such discussion could prove endless I think. Some of my favorites have many shortcomings . . . often I have to remind myself to make room for error, and allow myself the ability to enjoy the time I devote to watching them. Fortunate for me, it's not all that difficult to do . . .

The picture with the priest is turned the wrong way.

That's funny because my wife and I are currently watching The Pacific right now as well. I think we're about to start episode 8 of 10. She's really gotten into it and won't let me watch any without her.

Both 'Thin Red Line' and 'The Pacific' were filmed in Queensland Australia and not just the bits that were set in Oz-I'm surprised that more people don't know about TRL as it was nominated for Academy awards the year it was released although it was somewhat overshadowed by 'Saving Pte Ryan' released the same year-was the more thoughtful film of the two.
