Hi Stewyfox, that might well explain it. The Volkssturm wore any kit which was available.

    Cheers, Ade.

Just seen this interesting picture from the Eastern front during the last few months of the war. The caption claims it shows a German soldier and a "Volksdeutsche" volunteer. I would have thought his helmet might've caused a bit of confusion.

Yes, wearing that Soviet helmet was not a good idea..... Nice photo which shows the later model 30m Panzerfaust too.

    Cheers, Ade.

Every once in a while I have a trawl through this magnificent resource as I did earlier today. It compliments this forum perfectly as a number of the pictures on there have reminded of posts I've recently read here.

Like the following shots of Panther tracks, the famous Otto Funk of 12th SS (I've heard that's him in the middle of the three EK winners), late-war experimental stahlhelms (are they?), Bren used by a German and Tiger near Leningrad.
Forgot to come back and post this until now !!

The EK award photo is of SS-Gren Klaus Schuh, a MG gunner in SS Hauptscharfuihrer Wilhelm Boigk's Zug. He is also known for the same photos that include Otto Funk and for the above photo where he' s shown as being decorated with the EK II together with SS-Gren. Sepp Bund.

Both Schuh and Bund both were killed in action on 26 June near Cheux, and the same day Otto Funk was wounded.

    regards

    Paul
