On my neighborhood-block in Lampertheim/Germany there wasn't a single family that didn't lose someone during the war, not one!...My family alone lost 3 killed on the German side, other neighbors all either lost relatives, limbs, or were refugees from Prussia, Silesia, etc...
You can imagine the looks I would get as a kid running around the neighborhood wearing my Stahlhelm and assorted WH-Gear as I played "Army", lol...
    cheers, Glenn

Sobering statistics indeed but I already see that the stats for Norway are quite a bit off --- according to quick calculations it seems that 10 360 Norwegian citizens died during ww2, a number which also includes 852 Norwegian citizens fighting with the SS or Wehrmacht. Also --- 735 Norwegian Jews were killed, not 762 as per that statistic

    Other corrections and casualty numbers:

-2000 Norwegian soldiers were killed, not 4709
-2091 Resistance fighters were killed, not 1481
    -3638 Norwegian Merchant Fleet casulaties
-1779 (other) civilians casualties, not 1000
-852 "Frontkjempere" casualties (soldier fighting for he Axis/Nazi Germany)

(sources: Statistisk Sentralbyrå/SSB and the book "De Som Falt")

To add to this we also had around 30 000 (roughly) foreign citizen deaths here during ww2, according to statistics from SSB this number was made up of approx. 15 500 Soviet and 4200 Jugoslavian POWs plus 11 500 Germans (number of German war graves).

So, in total, it would seem that somewhere around 40 360 people lost their lives on Norwegian soil during ww2 --- adding this foreign total because I see Axis soldiers included in the posted statistic as well, something which only makes it right to incl. the deaths of all the other nationalities.
