One of my favourite films, Dirk Bogarde made a few realistic war films in the 50s, another was They who dare, i think it was called, with Denholm Elliott, a similar Greek storyline only about sabotaging fuel dumps and airfields, i could sit and watch all those old films all week long, hang on , i have !!!!!
Another is One of Our aircraft is missing, a great film, good story line, good acting, Sea of Sand is another with John Gregson , Richard Attenborough, Percy Herbert, and of course Ice cold in Alex, with John Mills, Silvia Sims, Anthony Quayle, Harry Andrews, who made 79 films during his long career along with numerous stage plays and was in the Royal Artillery during WW2
Another bit of useless info is that Percy Herbert, was a POW at the hands of the Japanese and once spent 6mths in the cooler for stealing a can of corned beef, he was also paid an extra £5.00 per week by David Lean when filming Bridge on the River Kwai as a technical advisor and it was his idea that the troops should whistle," Colonel Bogey" for the musical score.
It could be said that these older war films were made all the more realistic in regards to the acting because most of the actors had been in the Services during the War

...and back then, they had no CGI, so they had to use real human beings as actors (perish the thought).
No effing Jar Jar Binks and when hordes of soldiers attacked, it was the real deal.
'Lawrence of Arabia' spring to mind.

    Ade,
I bought the DVD about a month ago after a holiday in Crete. Whilst on holiday i read a book called the cretan Runner which prompted me to buy the DVD. During the withdrawal of British Forces the Commandos covered the withdrawal to Sfakia, at one point on the high ground the RSM went around the positions and told the blokes to hide their Fanny knives in the rocks, bury them etc in case they were taken prisoner and the 'Commando order' was enacted.

Another not well known fact regarding Harry Andrews was that he was a 'Ginger', living with his lover actor Basil Hoskins for decades until his death in 1989. Who'd of thought that?
