No, you don't force this hobby on people you don't know or that are uncomfortable with it. Then again you don't force religious or political beliefs on others (at least you should'nt).
Enjoy your war room and keep learning about the history. If asked then say it loud and say it proud, you are a collector and student of a very important period in history.
I live in a house alone and it is rare that people come in that I don't know so my things are all over. I just tell people not to take offence as this is one of my hobbies ... done.

On a side note I'm seeing more and more fear of this government and that scares the hell out of me. If we don't want history to repeat itself we had best turn this trend around or kiss any freedom goodbye. Another reason not to give into laws that prohibit the right to bear arms.

You can collect any type of military items that you want to.
In the United states German items were war trophys. Most WWII officers and enlisted men legally brought them home. The same guys that had outstanding military carriers after the war and the ones that returned to civilian life.
The local veterans groups had them displayed in their clubs and buildings and no one said anything.
There are no laws against these types of items as that would be contrary to constitional rights that would include ownership.
The only people that might care are the politically correct group that $hit a brick when they think someone might be offended.
As far as the subject brought up is concerned you can also belong to any group that you care to in the USA. Democrat, Republican, KKK, Black panthers, etc., etc..
With no disrespect tp your father he does not have a clue as to which he speaks. If he feals you have been given bad advice please have him contact me personally by email and I will be happy to discuss the legalities of this matter with him.
I assisted the Jewish History Museum in Tulsa Oklahoma in establishing a holocaust section in which many Nazi Items are displayed as part of their collection.
If the Jews collect Nazi items for historical reasons where is the problem?
As usual I talk to much.

Yes SteveR collecting of TR items is legal, even in Germany. But saying that because jews can collect TR items without any problems, it would'nt or sould'nt be a problem for others does not really work. I mean one can say 20 millions was killed in the holocaust, but in some countries you would go to jail saying it was "only" 1 million. Fact is that one might get problems for ones legal intrest and hobby, but i neither can nor should, prevent people from exercising their right to do so. It comes with the territory so to speak.

Thanks for your comment but i'm sure Steve knows the laws as do most of us he was referring to US laws only.

I agree with the above sentiments and cautions regarding the owning of TR material.
It can be a rewarding and educational journey when you take 'politics' out of it.

Unless you are a blatant supremist, skinhead neo-nazi type, you have nothing
to worry about, and your father may be over-reacting some, but as said,
best to keep TR stuff out of sight mostly. Do him a favor - re-assure
him by doing just that - Don't advertise.
    Regards,

    Steve.

Here is a local group parading down a main highway close to where I live, don't know there story, but they are skinheads wanting attention....and legal to parade! I often wanted to go out and ask them: "Do you know what "true" National Socialists were"? Some people have to much time on there hands
I think alot of them don't have a clue!............Oh members, I think the flags are post war.
