I have seperate cover. When I discussed it with my insurers they said my household insurance would not cover the collection, and that additional cover was needed. They asked me to send them a general description of the collection and its value and they got back to me with a quote, it was very straightforward. I would certainly recommend a phone call to your insurers for advice.

you must catalog every item or you wont ever get a pay out..i have it, but ive just been told that photos are not good enough..i think its pretty much the same everywhere as all the insurance agencies seem global

i was told that every item had to be written down with a description and value, i was even told i should have receipts for all items (this was from someone i know ,who works there, im calling tomorrow to get a definitive answer, as i was only told this this afternoon) ..it used to be that photos were ok ,well thats what i was led to believe when i got it in the first place

You are right to raise this point, thank you. The problem with receipts is that I have been collecting since I was a child and even have peices that have been in the family. How could you prove their value?

That is something I have always wondered about insuring collections - how can you 'prove' the value of an item rather than what you might think it is worth, especially with items that lack receipts?

A few years back, I called my insurance company and told them I had some valuable collectibles. I upped our homeowners policy to compensate, and was told this covers things. I guess I need to call them again and make sure this is how things work. Good post, and I think one that will help a lot of people remember that we need to make sure we cover our collections against unthinkable catastrophe.

    Hi Bob
I use to have them and drop them.
They only will give 10 scents on the dollars.
They never ask for pictures or a catalogue
