Not a daft question at all. It's the maker's mark for Assmann.

It's the makers mark for Assmann & Sohne of Ludenscheid. It represents a stylized stick man wearing a type of bowler hat. Here's an example of it on my wartime bronze Panzerkampfabzeichen.

thanks hpl paul and ned ,i have heard of this maker ,mainly from watching episodes of seinfeld so a known TR period maker continuing production post war and beyond ,very interesting ill do some research ,ned you always put a smile on my face ,thanks again for the help, james
