Found this story like so many all inspiring.Author MICHAEL MORPURGO (WAR HORSE)has written a new novel intitled "A MEDAL FOR LEROY"based on the true story of WALTER DANIEL JOHN TULL.The first Black Commisioned officer in the British Army.Walter was a top flight footballer who joined up in 1914 with the footballers battilion MIDDLESEX REGIMENT.WALTER took part in 6 major offensives including the SOMME twice,messine,3rd battle of epres,was killed during the last SOMME campaign on the 25/3/1918.his body like so many was never found/recovered.he was awarded the MILITARY CROSS for leading his men in ITALY 1917/18.this award was never recieved now the author is hoping his novel may sway opinions and finally give WALTER the recognition he fully deserves.regards minnie.
