Now you're bringing back childhood memories, lol...Steiner, Das Eiserne Kreuz with James Coburn was a big hit with us youngsters growing up in Lampertheim, Germany...I remember me and a fellow German classmate (Whose dad didn't come home until 1955, btw) were excited to see this film because it was a rare depiction of a German soldier as the hero, and not the customary on-screen villain...We also thought the combat scenes/blood & guts were quite realistic at the time, lol...
    cheers, Glenn

I also thought August Diehl was good as SS-Sturmbannführer Dieter Hellstrom in the aforementioned Inglourious Basterds. In an earlier role, he played Anton Burger - a young Czech communist who delayed the counterfeiting process at Sachsenhausen.

Cristoph Waltz as SS COL. Hans Landa in an otherwise horrible/lame Inglorious Basterds.

Best films, Downfall, Stalingrad, Cross of Iron is also great, not as good as the book, however Stiner is wearing a Gold Combat Infantry badge, they were not issued until later than the date this film was supposed to take place in, Das Boot is also great and as my Grandather was on oil Tankers in WW2 he had a REAL problem with Subs...

    Just my thoughts.
