    [QUOTE=jimpy;118591]Hi Harry

    OK, I'll bite! As far as I can remember, the abbreviations stand for......

    CTB.......Confined to Barracks
    BC............Battery Commander
    TQMS........Troop QuarterMaster Serjeant

    Cant remember what ROP and T&A stand for though.

    Just out of curiosity, going on your avatar and the above, where you in RA?

    Regards etc

    Ian

    Painting Coal white was done, I believe, to prevent theft.

    Cheers, Ade.
    Yep as Ade's stated this was done to prevent people nicking it at night time, this practice also took place at some railway yards, so my dad tells me, so this was not just a Military practice.

    Oh and as to things of a mundane nature, in some cases this was down to routine inspections, for example when my Dad was in the Royal Artillery and they had a high ranking Staff officer visiting the Rocket testing station were he was based, so they washed the hanger floor with a Fuel Bowser load of petrol, and paint the grass green

    Hi Ian, yes the avatar is of me at Girdwood Barracks - New Lodge 1974. T's & A's stood for tests and adjustments. Between 69 and 71, I was on the Bofor's 40/70's. The FCE7 radar was fitted with an oil-filled mechanical computer, and we had to carry out regular T's & A's on it. As for the coal, in my day it WAS only for punishment the ritual of painting it white, as was cleaning the parade ground with a tooth-brush. Sometimes the poor lad on jankers was made to paint the 'white' coal 'black'

    When I was in training at Woolwich in 69 our Sergeant Instructor used to have a battered old aluminium teapot which he would give to someone to bull up if they did anything wrong. The whole troop got CTB's once because he lost his temper with us and smashed his pace-stick on the wall. We had to buy him a new one. I recall an incident when my BSM (Don Potter) walked up to a man on parade and told him that his Beret had a 'whee' on it. The poor lad (Gunner Adamson) didn't have a clue what he was on about untill Potter snatched the Beret off his head and threw it like a frisbee - shouting 'wheeeeee' as he did so. Then he said to him... 'Pick the bloody thing up and give it a clean.'
