    Otto Sander was best known for his portrayal in the film of the drunk and newly decorated Ritterkreuzträger and U-Boat commander Philipp Thomsen.

    He was a great actor and one of the reasons I became interested in WWII. When I was about nine or ten years old, my grandpa played The film, Das Boot for me. An early favorite of mine, indeed.
    There seems to have been a lot of death around lately...Amen.

    He didn't look well in the film.

    He made the perfect U-Boot captain....I thought his part was great! A loss, for sure...
