Remembering Australia's 'Pearl Harbour' 70 years on.

Saw this one today, makes an interesting read as I had never been aware of it.......

Darwin 1942.

I lived in Darwin for 10 years during my Army service.....there's is a map of Darwin city in the military museum at east point...it has a red dot marking each bomb hit,,there are hundreds....a notvatvthe bottom of the map states that this is only half the bombs that fell between 1942 and 43, if they marked all of thrm it would be a red sheet of paper.....their are reminders everywhere in the city, bullet holes, shrapnel marks and remains of bunkers and anti aircraft positions, it is probaly the only place in Australia, where like in Europe you csn find relics if you know where to look...I myself found dozens of peices

I must shamefully admit i never new the Darwin raids were that extensive. I spend my time reading about the western desert,new guinea, and europe,but have failed to study the biggest raid on our own soil.
and to think i have visited Pearl Harbour but iv never been to Darwin
i think a trip is definitely on the cards

Darwin was bombed 65 times in total. Today it is a magnificent modern tropical city, I love the place!

A key strategic port I would say. Its a good job the Japanese didnt take it
