Sad news !
I met Richard back in 2000, when he attended a local Para reunion.
.. A quiet but proud man.

Richard Todd was a member of 7 (LI ) Bn The Parachute Regiment and as such landed in Normandy around 12.45am 6/6/1944 , he then fought in the Benouville bridgehead near Pegasus Bridge as part of the Bn.
I loved his films and your right Ade his portrayal of Guy Gibson VC was a classic and of course by great Irony he also played John Howard the commander of the Pegasus Bridge Coup de Main party in the Longest Day.
I met him at Ranville in 2004 when one of our group sat in his seat !!! Last saw him there a couple of years ago , last year he attended for the 65th but wasn't at Ranville on the 6th itself.
RIP an Airborne soldier and a film legend.

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

rip /I seen Richard in a play in about fifteen years ago.
A great man, and a great loss.
I have to say I've always thought what a fine actor he was, especially in such films as the dam busters, the longest day, and he even appeared in a Dr who story if my memory serves me correctly.
