I'm quite envious of those who have a medium and the talent to teach.

I am just a loner with only you lot to discuss my military collecting interests with.
Even friends who I let into my "inner sanctum" may appreciate one or two relic helmets but then quip " why do you need so many - they all look the same" .... at that point I give up and crawl back into my safe house.

Cheers, Dan ( oh, yes- he's a bit weird)

My mate at work has seen my parcels arrive as I have them sent there as it is manned all the time, we have discussed various things that have arrived and he now owns a SMLE from every year of WW1, so 1914-18. So I suppose in some cases this hobby can become a little addictive in the right circumstnaces lol (BTW he is now on about buying a few lugers after what he has recently seen, his wife will kill me!)

The successful collector is the person who goes beyond the artifact to its context, that is, to its chronology, cause and effect. This website and its members embrace this idea with gusto, and those who disdain it meet a swift and sharp fate. Some are better enabled to undertake this task than others, but I am gratified at how generalized this idea operates here. Where it does not obtain, the path to the truth is twisted and the search for knowledge is harmed by sophomoric clap trap. Larry C. is especially good at chasing such a thing away so we can all think, analyze and discuss to best effect. He is a fine teacher.

I couldn't agree more FB. At the end of the day what is an artifact without context? Why do we spend hundreds of dollars on 70 year old grey pants? Its all about context. Those grey pants may have once clothed the legs of an SS soldier fighting the soviets on the eastern front. Thats a good start, by why is he fighting the soviets on the eastern front? Because Hitler invaded the USSR. Well why did Hitler invade the USSR? It can go on and on, getting bigger and bigger. So really without context were just idiots spending hundreds of dollars on grey pants.

Well said. And, since the grey pants get faked or can be misunderstood, the origins of the thing in state, society and industry are also important.
I appreciate your post. Others, however, are deeply put out by the complexities of the search for knowledge and actively try to harm those who want to learn.
We do not permit such behavior here, which is why this site has flourished.

    Hi Larry-san,

That is a interesting topic. True that sometimes it is not easy to speak or teach about military related subjects outside.

Here I would share some of my own experiences of teaching or sharing other people about military history.

    I. Calgary, Canada (2007~2009 March)

At that time I was a beginner of a military collector (1~2 year), and I was working at a convenience store inside a post-secondary institution (SAIT).
As a cashier, I see and serve many students and staffs, and they were all nice people, had a great time working there. Thing about me is that I like military style clothing, and I wear them on work(on Fridays specially). Of course, nothing would offend anybody, some of my colleagues and customers even gave me some compliment (having character). Then some of them started to ask me why you dress up like that, and I tell them I like history, specially military history, and a collector as well. They understand and, we started to exchange conversation about their family relatives during WWI or WWII.
There were few guys who are really getting interested in WWI, WWII history and they would come in and visit me everyday. Then an idea struck me, since I am a collector, why not bring in some of my collections to do a show and tell. Since it is a school, there will be some quiet moments, and that were the periods that I can do a show and tell. So I brought some of my kits and tell them what's all about. They liked my stuff! After all, pretty much everyday they would ask me, "Taka, did you bring anything today?", they were eager to see my collections. They had a great time and, I have a great time. I think it was Halloween 2008 that I dressed up as a WWII U.S.M.C. and they really liked it. My boss even made a job recruiting poster of me with my out fit, and he told me that after putting up the poster, there were lots of students wanted for a job! That was one of my greatest moments of my life, hard to imagine my military hobby(personality) would gave them such an impact.
Unfortunately, this didn't last long. My parents would liked me to work in Japan (April of 2009), so I have no choice but to "obey their order". So that put a full stop in this chapter. I had an awesome time during the two years working in that place.

DSC_0040.JPG Photo of me dressed up as a U.S.M.C. during Halloween, 2008. (They used this exact photo to make a job recruiting poster)

II. Chiba, Japan (2009 April ~2012 March)

While I was in Japan, I was pretty much alone. No relatives, no friends. I was basically spending much time at my apartment. There were almost nobody to talk about military, or place to find military. Not until after few months that I starting to use their transportation and went to Tokyo. There I was walking around Ueno and saw some antique cameras, so I went in took a few looks and I asked for something military or antique watches, than the owner told me their is a Nakata store not far from here, for watches you can try Nakano Broadway. I went to the Nakata store and almost everything is replica, and they are expansive! Next, I went to Nakano Broadway and there was a military/antique watch store (Moon Star), and finally something for me to look at. The store owner was very nice as well, and we had a long conversation. There is also another store (Lazy Cat), now that's one good place, and the owner too was also very nice, made another long conversation. So, every Saturdays and Sundays, I would take a visit to both stores exchanging military related subjects. We talked anything from WWI ~ Present warfare/political related things, good times. That's how I know the Tokyo Victory Show as well.
There were other places that I can share my military knowledge, there are few clothing stores, we call them Furugiya (Vintage clothing stores) I would come in dressed up and they too like my style. And they told me that if I am not wearing military that isn't myself!.
Unfortunately, I have to be transferred to Shanghai, China (yes, not again), to help look after a factory as a production manager. So I have to leave Japan.
I can say that I had a great time in Japan after all.

III. Shanghai, China (2012 March ~ Present)

Not much to say in China, here there is nothing for me to go and stay. The only place that I can talk and share military subjects is in the forums. I am enjoying teaching and learning here, I won't complaint.

Well that's part of my history here. Thank you for reading.

    Regards,
    Taka

Great stuff Gents..I would like to add also..that no matter how big or small our collections are..as these artifacts..are not just collectables......they are tools of our trade...without them we would have nothing to talk about....or...let me say not enough information as some can talk about it without having anything at all.
Without our pencils and pens..protractors..and calculators..we would never complete any written assignments. I would say that we should consider ourselves not only as teachers..but Doctors of our profession....our field of interest. An Orthopedic Doctor can not do that of a Cardiologist and vice versa...but equally qualified and intelligent...but opposite of each other..in study. The hand can not do what the ear can do. All are necessary as all of us here are useful..in teaching. Once in awhile a Quack Doctor comes on the horizon..and must be either taught or escorted out. There is no room for cancer in the body..and it must be rid of.

@ Danmark...some may think of us as fools and idiots...but it is what is unknown to those..is a fear..due to a a lack of knowledge....or for those...."Forming conclusions without the facts is the practice of fools" .........we have alot of that going around these days..and sadly the absence of history in our schools...by the "Big heads" ...or should I say from the.."Invasion of the history snatchers"

"More than one"? people quip...but that more than one has its own character..and ownership of another. Having more than one sets the tone and scale of how large the era.....and horror. Having one German helmet or sleeve patch is not moving at all.....2 or more...is the beginning of a heart pounding. I have been to see our Moderator "Horst"..and his collection..of Gauleiter uniforms...I was kind of creeped out after that visit..not because he had so many..but because what they represented...I was never so close to so much evil in my life..but exhilarating at the same time. I had the pleasure of being in Tom Wittmanns home..and viewing his private collection.
Gents Like Friedrich B and Doug B...I could not imagine the intenseness.

There are some that just dont want to know..out of fear of what others may think of them..going to visit people like us. They act as though we are the enemy..when in reality..it is those trying to hide history are the enemy. I choose not to be a man of the world..as I dont want to be dictated to...nor do I want to care what people think of me and following the crowd..just to be liked. Nothing grows in the dark!!
I have a tough as nails Asian wife..who is tolerant of my hobby...but some necessity needs to hide some fact of true worth..of these items we collect..as I would be sleeping on the couch..if she knew. Im still grateful for her in my life...other Gents here...are quite fortunate that some of their wives..go to the shows with them and help them to buy..what they collect...not all wives or significant others are the same. Each are useful in their own way.

One of the biggest problems I run into when talking to people..about collecting this stuff......are when they ask...."How do you know its not fake"...maybe this is a copy...what proof do you have it is real? ...this too also opens the door wider for discussion.
Other comments..which we all know...why would you want to spend that kind of money on junk or evil stuff?? >_< ....here we go..and this is where patience needs to take priority...being diplomatic and not defensive....I think more money daily is spent on cigarettes and hairstyles..eating at Convenience stores everyday of the week..which all are temporary..before they go out and drop another $200 in a week.

What are some of the questions people ask you?

I have some people asked me "Do you like War?", I tell them "No, I don't like WAR, but I support and respect the Troops."

    Cheers!
