    Hans-Georg Hess !!
I just read a very brief article about him. What's amazing is the fact that he was such a young U-Boot commander. He must have been pretty good at his job.

He was just 16 when he joined the Kriegsmarine, and by the age of 22 he had been awarded the RK. Quite a man you met there Paul.

Regarding age, the youngest commander of U-Boot was Ludwig-Ferdinand von Friedeburg (U-155), then Kurt Braun (U-763). Both were 20 years of age, Braun almost 21. Hans-Georg Hess was the fourth youngest. At the other end of the scale, Kpt.Bruno Mahn (UD-5) was the oldest at 54, then Walter Burghagen (U-219) at 52 years. Interesting is the fact that of all the U-Boat commanders, only 14 were aged 40 or above.

    Regards,

    Carl
