Thank you for posting this. Its sad, but I suppose it was the way to handle combat stress and other mental illnesses during the period. Either way, as the article makes out, it is important not to forget that not every serviceman had it easy after the War.
no comment.
Barbaric and still practiced in the UK until the 1970s, thankfully there are far better anti psychotic drugs available now!....
I read this in the journal this morning on my train ride to work. It's a terrible history but at least we're in a better position to treat our troops and general patients.
Barbaric indeed and unacceptable treatment especially for these heroes that have already sacrificed so much for their country.
Also obviously I understand that other countries did this as well, but it does not change the fact that the U.S. did this to 2000 veterans.
Awefull way to treat some Heroes.
dave.
so was this treatment used for servicemen who suffered with PTSD after tours in Vietnam?........
I believe there is a small section in Peter Brune's "A Bastard of a Place" that describes a 39th Battalion soldier who refused to join the AIF when the 39th disbanded. He was sent to Moresby and finished the war removing the brains of dead Australian Servicemen for shipment to Australian Universities.
We were one of the "several" unfortunately.
All the best
Dave
