It a very valuable tool, one I've been using a USB microscope to examine SS and other helmet decals for years now and there are many pinned threads on the topic over on GHW. In fact the USB scope is becoming de rigeur in helmet collecting, a must have.

I've been meaning to post the same here but many helmet guys are members of both fora so I haven't spent the time to do it here. Below are some links. At 20-400x the fakes simply break down but you need to examine hundreds of real - and fake - to kow the "fingerprints" of both and what to look for. I also have a background in graphic design and printing so applying that knowledge to decals as well certainly doesn't hurt.

One thing I would caution is knowledge doesn't come out of the box. A fake under magnification can look real if you don't know what real is.

Iwas interested by Dave's post enough to go and check a couple of these out this morning. I must say that you really don't need anything higher than x200 mag and tbh they don't get anywhere near that, but it doesn't matter, you don't need higher than x50 or at most x100. Put it this way, you can see BACTERIA at x400 mag on a proper scientific microscope, but not on these,it isn't possible! So there's no point in buying a x400+ USB microscope as it is superfulous and cannot live up to it's claims of up to x800 magnification.

I have ordered a Veho 001 Deluxe off ebay, it's over £20 cheaper than the exact same model I tried in Currys this morning, and it'll be perfect for anyones needs in this hobby. Don't waste money on the x400 models is my advice, x200 mag maximum is more than good enough!

    Regards, Ned.
