What caused this damage?

Until now, im still curious with this KNIL pre war canteen.

So what caused this damage? Is this battle damage type?

A sharp-edged instrument would be my guess.

something has worn into it thats for sure ,maybe a wire ligature as a make do carrying strap ,is there a mark elsewhere on the circumferance of the neck ?

No sir, the mark is only that one.
Something caused the metal to peel apart like a skin wound...my thoughts either a hot edged instrument...or something flying hot and fast like shrapnel.

Ah that's some real possibilities too.
If this indeed a shrapnel damage, i guess the wearer is lucky indeed.
About that hot edged instrument or shrapnel, how high the temperature needed to peel metal like this?
there is also the possibility its a mark picked up during manufacture
Aluminium melting point is 660 oc. (I used to do black sand casting)
