Operation Compass, an amazing result from a small force against much "mightier" opposition. The defence of Tobruk is also an amazing feat against overwhelming odds. And all the others mentioned, Market Garden, Monte Cassino, Normandy, the Bulge, Stalingrad the Battle of Britain etc...

For me a small battle near where I'm from the battle of Casole 2 pak 40 with a total of 6 men against an american armoured division and french maroccan soldier....

Good choice, I'm very interested in the battle too . Especially our brothers, Estonians serving there.

For me, the battle of Budapest. When I was in the city, I discovered it was hard and in two times, in 1945, only SS against Russian.
It waas the stalingrad of the W SS

Not for once, the Burma campaign and the terrible losses incurred seem to have been overlooked. I'm not that up on the actual conflict there, although an old chap in the village who recently passed away was at Kohima, and involved in that battle for nearly the entire 3 months it took place in mid 1944.

So i've chosen a smaller battle within the main one of Kohima, that of the 'Battle of the Tennis Court' where British and Indian troops successfully repelled many Japanese attacks to capture the Kohima Ridge and so gain a route for the invasion of India via the Imphal-Kohima road.

The 'Battle of the Tennis Court' proved to be the turning point of the Battle of Kohima which was the turning point of the Burma Campaign. Earl Louis Mountbatten, the Supreme Allied Commander in the theatre, described Kohima as:

"Probably one of the greatest battles in history... in effect the Battle of Burma... naked unparalleled heroism... the British and Indian Thermopylae".

Inspiring stuff.

Any battle against the communist regime. Do not forget the battles in Korea and Vietnam. But from the WWII - the Battle of Narva, battle of Berlin and Köningsberg. And of course the Kurland battles in Latvia 1944-45.
