M-40 Luftwaffe Quest Restore?

Hey guys, just wanted some opinions about this M-40 Luft I just purchased. Any ideas about the rusted side? Is it worth trying to remove the rust? In some areas its pretty bad and I worry with time those areas will only continue to get worse. I'm new to the whole process of rust removal so if attempted this would be my first try.

Any opinions are welcome!

I love it the way it is. The decal is nearly perfect? What is the condition of the liner?

I always say that if it has not been messed with why mess with it?

Well I have to say I'm having a heck of a time figuring out this whole picture issue. Thanks for the input Ty. I just worry about whether or not it will continue to rust.

Fantastic find, I love it

With regards to removing the rust or not, that is a bit of a vexed question. Most people prefer to not have the helmet "messed" with in any way, but your rust still looks a little active.

I would be inclined to leave it as is, and keep in in a stable environment with as around 30% humidity, perhaps just a bit of a brush off of the current rust and a thin coat of renwax if you must. Sure the metal will still continue to corrode at a SLOW rate, but the other option of wiping the rusted parts with a rag soaked in oxalic acid will clean up the rust, but it will alter the overall nice patina. It;s a hard question, and a bit of a personal decision

i woult give it a go you have special derust liquids and the dont affect the decal but don t take any risks the decal area looks fine

Yes I think here shortly im going to give it a try see if I can clean some of the rust off without taking to high of a risk.

The rust isn't all that bad. Any rust removal you do will look obvious. I'd leave it as is. A good way to store the helmet is to get those silicone bead packets that are used to keep food fresh. You can purchase them or just save them from the things you buy. They are commonly used to keep silver from tarnishing because they do a great job at sucking up moisture.

It's also important to keep anything you have behind glass. Common air pollutants will do a number on your collection.
