you are correct as the green paint i found under all the other stuff is allso in the pitted metal as well so i might whack some more paint stripper on it tomorrow to try & get more of the filler off as it seems to soften it up quite nicely.

Looks better like it is now I rekon wolfy, nice one! Ive decided not to "restore" my old lid, ill leave it as is! I took your advice and had a look at parts on ebay...saw this as a potential project for you

Was there any stamped no's on your lid by the way.

no mate it was all to pitted around that area for any numbers to remain.
