i wouldn't use cotton wool buds & also do this in a well ventilated area because of the fumes. use some old rags / cloth with the acetone cotton wool will just make it messier but if you use paint stripper apply it leave for a few minutes & what i use is some cheap disposable plastic scrapers to remove the gunk then clean

wow o m f g you can actualy see the varnish been eaten alive by the ammonia and a beatiful luftwaffe grey is appeiring

Do NOT remove the liner! Work around it the best you can.
