Restoring a german "crusher cap"

Article about: Hello everyone, i bought what looks like a Schirmmütze Alter Art, in a state that can only be described as "garbage". Since i am sewing repro crusher caps as a hobby for some time

my cap arrived today, and my hopes of saving it sank rapidly after unwrapping the parcel. As requested, i posted some pictures of it in the "beaters" thread:

Post Your Pics of Beater Visors!

i still would be glad if someone could give me some advice on
    - how to clean the fabric a bit
    - how to treat the hardened sweatband
    - any ways to save the visor, which seems to be made of lacquered cardboard (?)
or any other tips that could help me in treating this "beauty"....

    thank you very much,
    Helen

I really like the patina of your cap, if you ' re not a professionnal, don 't try to clean it.
    Just put away the dust.
The fabric should be protected against cloth moth and other cockroaches...that 's all.
If there is a smell, only time can help to put it away.
you can 't made new with old.
You can just keep it the most acceptable as it can be.

Personally i think this one would not only be extremely hard to restore, but the end look would not be to your satisfaction, i think you could fully strip the cap into its component parts, work seperately to enhance the look of the sweat band, any internal lining, unstitch the visor and restore the look, remove the cloth outer and external band, then put them aside, wait for any other caps that need restoring and use the parts you have in order to help other projects, even the saving of the insignia would enhance the look of a cap that has none

    Amazing work!

A bit of boot polish on the visor and it's almost as good as new!

I agree, black polish and an emblem and it is extremely presentable!!!
