subscribing/unsubscribing to a thread

It seems that every time I make a post I'm automatically subscribed to that thread (and a as a result my inbox gets notifications of "likes" and responses and whatnot.) Is there any way to turn this off once and for good, or do I have to go into my profile each time I make a response and manually unsubscribe every time? I've looked but don't seem to find it.
