It was all packed in wooden boxes, and placed inside the hull before the turret was installed. Upon arrival at the destination, the maintenance crews would have to hoist off the turret, retrieve the crates inside, then re-install the turret, or break open the crates, and get the gear out, then pass all the gear, and broken wood out the hatches.

This is still done today. On active duty, when my unit first got the brand new Hummers, the cargo bed had a large wooden crate strapped down on the deck. We had to remove the crate, open it, then install the accessories onto our new vehicle. This included radio mounts, wiring harness for the radio mounts, the top bows, and vinyl cover, the weapons mounts, pioneer tools, OVM, and some other equipment.

Intresting, that was new to me also. but it does make sense. that way on the journey over, there wasn't going to be any equipment missing.
