Default Russian Belt Buckle! Can anyone identify?

    Hello Forum

    This is my first post.

Can anyone identify this belt Buckle?

This belt buckle was brought back from my partners great great grandfather from the 1st world war, I think? It was given to my partners grandmother who died aged 91 some years ago from her father when she was just a girl.

Anyway, I told my mother in law who was given the buckle by her mom that I would look it up on the Internet and this seems the most knowledgeable after doing a little research!

Here are some images, I hope you guys can help with the history. Thanks!

Is that some kind of brown stone in the middle?
To me it looks more like female jewelry than a military belt buckle.

It is for sure czarist with the double-eagle.

    Hi

Yes it is a brown stone similar to tortoiseshell in the middle! The stone is 1in in diameter and 1cm raised!

The buckle is 5 in wide and 4 in high if it helps!

It also has 4 holes, 2 on each half, top and bottom.

    Thanks for replying

I assume this buckle is possible to take apart in two pieces, with the hook attaching into the loop? The whole construction look a bit weak for a belt attachment device. I notice the four small holes, two on the left and two on the right edge. I guess these are for attachment to the garment.

    Hi Matilda

The buckle we have is definitely Russian as the double headed eagle is identical!

    Thanks

I don't think it's military at all....not even for parade purposes. To me - it's a piece of jewelry that has some national pride attached to it. Kind of like people that wear current flags as belt buckles if you know what I mean. Can't help regarding the construction of the buckle and who would have worn it - but I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the military.
Cool buckle - don't you just wish it could talk!
    Cheers!

    Hi Guys,

I have to agree, the buckle is not military as it is missing the cannons as shown on the other buckle. It could be used at court or in a governmental position though. Finally, i think it is more likely a SASH buckle, similar to the sort worn by Scotsmen in traditional/military dress.....Just a guess!
