Hi Jan..the letters look to be a period personalization by the original owner..but IMO not tied to any regiment or certain branch of service. Excellent patina regardless. Regards Larry

While the original Russian M 1803r naval daggers were quite a bit longer, I would say that there is a fairly high probability that both the scabbard and blade (which in the photos looks four sided and wider in one direction and narrower in the other) is a naval dagger that has been shortened and is now missing the handle. With naval daggers from the time of Alexander III both etched, and even dated from a Russian armory like Zlatoust.

But it’s also with the engraving on the upper locket that I think is very interesting, because it’s not the Russian Imperial Crown. But more like a Ducal Crown. With Finland an area of contention between Sweden and Russia when it came under Russian control at the time of Alexander I. Then a long period of semi-independence as the Grand Duchy of Finland. Then seeing the Russian Emperor Nicolas II making an effort to assert more Russian control, some turmoil, a compromise, more unrest - and then the 1st World War. Regards, FP
