Thank you for starting the thread Carl and to all those who have contributed to it. It is a very important date on the calender to all of us who have an interest in and study history no matter what field you specialise in.

I apologise for turning the thread slightly sour for this one post but it should be made perfectly and crystal clear that any member with extremist views on the Holocaust or those who wish to deny it will be banned without any warning. Your views are not welcome here, not tolerated and you will be removed from this forum and every trace of you deleted no matter who you are or how long you've been here or how much you've donated etc.

Dwight Eisenhower was a man of great wisdom. He forsaw the advent of holocaust deniers and made as many people, civilians and military, witness for themselves the results of a political system that lost all sense of humanity and logic. When growing up, one of my neighbors, Mr. Detweiler, a German American GI, had been a witness to all of this and it effected him for the rest of his life. He was ashamed of his German heritage.
A very close friend of mine was raised by parents who had been victims of the Holocaust and survived only because they were young and could work. My pesonal life experiences does not allow me any understanding for those who venerate or deny the history of what was produced by Adolf Hitler's demented mind.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. As a result of some of the other posts on this subject, I have purchased and am reading "The Last Album: Eyes from the Ashes of Auschwitz-Birkenau" by Ann Weiss (managed to get a copy signed by the author!) and just received today "The Auschwitz Album: A Book Based Upon an Album Discovered by a Concentration Camp Survivor, Lili Meier" (text by Peter Hellman). I have read a lot of other stories but these books of pictures really bring the reality home in a horrific way.
They will become part of my collection, to serve as a reminder of what happened. It should and must never be forgotten.

I know I have posted this somewhere else,, not sure if it was here on this forum,, but I had the great opportunity and also by accident to help a neighbor friend of mine do some handy work at a local synagogue quite few years ago. I was amazed when I walked in there the display case they had in the front foyer of the Memorabilia they had on display from the camps. I didnt even have to go to Washington DC to see it,,this was local by a few towns away. The display included photos of the guards ,,the camp commandants,,,the clothes that were worn,, incredibly a section of a boxcar. Also unrelated camp items of the Hitler youth,, and some SS items and armbands. I felt the intenseness of the whole room. A smiling older rabbi who saw me looking at the display, gave me a history lesson,, that I have never would of read in any book. I thought going to the synagogue to do some small work was going to be boring and plain. The Holocaust Memorial lives everyday in these places. I dont know if they all do this but the one I went to was an experience. We know those who have survived and even helped to liberate thses camps,,but speak with an Elder Rabbi..and you will get the full meaning of what happened. Regards Larry

A shame to see such comments as that above being posted on this subject. I'm not going to quote it as I hope it will disappear before long. The scenes from a camp on the World at War that I saw when I was young have stayed with me to this day and that such a thing took place still leaves me at a loss to understand how it was allowed to happen and it should never be forgotten.
