We pass through the gate and on the wall is a memorial to Political Prisoners housed there pre war.

To honour them and to remind us that Colditz Castle was used to imprison German Anti-Nazis in the period 1933-34 and that the road to the concentration camp began here for many courageous individuals: They fought that we might live.

The castle is divided into two court yards. The larger one was the domain of the Guards, while the other housed the prisoners.

This was the Guards quarters. It is now a Youth Hostel: you can stay there for 18 Euros a night regardless of your age....

The wooden shelter is there to protect an ongoing dig to discover the castle's earlier history. BTW this was the site of the wartime German kitchens, now demolished.

The archway leads out to the meadow I showed earlier. This is not on the same level as the castle and is much lower down the rocky outcrop on which the castle sits. Now a nature reseserve. Once a Royal hunting ground.

The big wooden door leads towards the next courtyard...

We now look forwards and are greeted by a lifesize cardboard cut-out of one of the Dutch POW's along with the famous dummy used to fool the Guards during Roll Calls.

Behind him is the museum entrance and gift shop. This is the former Guardhouse. One thing we found out is that they only take cash, which was a shame, but due to the fact they are still not geared up to process cards electronically.

We now turn right and enter the prisoners courtyard, but we first look back again at this big entrance.

Great pics. we went there in 92, the prisoners dressed as germans and marched out in an escape, the glider never flew out with anyone to escape
