Great thread idea Nuno, well done

If I remember correctly, the UK, former Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic and Slovakia) and Liechtenstein have the most castles/palaces in total and per square mile (or km, as the case may be), respectively, in the world. Needless to say, having spent the majority of the past several year here, I have seen a few dozen or so of them. Some, such as the famous Prague Castle shown below, are simply stunning. A few of my other personal favourites are Hluboká (Schloss Frauenberg) in south Bohemia, Karlštejn (Burg Karlstein) - founded in the 14th Century by Charles IV and Červená Lhota, a beautiful red chateau located on a small rocky island set in the middle of a lake, which is also in south Bohemia.

    Regards,

    Carl

When considering castles, palaces and such, we should not forget Neuschwanstein - from me, just a few hours away near Füssen in southwest Bavaria. Commissioned by Ludwig II as a retreat and homage to Richard Wagner, it was later used as the model for the Walt Disney castle. If you are ever in the area, be sure to go - it is simply breathtaking.

Wales has the most castles per square mile of any where in the world and that does not include the many hillforts. Here are some of those I have visited in the last few years for work or have dug at.

    Some impressive looking castles.

The best I can do is Fort Phil Kearny. A US Calvary outpost
used in the 1860s in Wyoming. I used to visit it often as a kid.

    That is really cool.
Has it been restored or the original condition wood?
    Cheers

The first picture shows some of the original wall.
That was all that was left of the original Fort.
The second pic is all new.
